The T-62 continued building upon the development of the T-54 tank and became the standard medium tank in the Soviet arsenal. The T-62 mounted the world’s first smoothbore tank gun, giving it considerably greater muzzle velocity than the western 90mm and 105mm guns. It was also capable of firing the latest generation of armor piercing ammunition that allowed this medium tank to punch well above its weight.
The combination of improved armor, a larger gun, and a powerful engine resulted in a cramped crew compartment that, in addition to other factors, hindered the rate of fire of the 115mm gun when compared with western tank designs. Unlike other Soviet designs, the T-62 was a capable night fighter thanks to infra-red lights and an infrared capable periscope for the commander.
