Injured seamen would often continue to serve in support roles, and that of cook or cook’s assistant was a popular choice. With rations that were often old and rancid, a good cook that could use herbs and exotic spices to make the food palatable – good even – was highly valued, and a well fed crew would often perform better in combat.
