Kabul and Other Souvenirs of the Third World War collects a sequence of six stories recounting the life of spy Tom Dubrowski in a world that very much resembles our present reality. The planet shudders in the grips of a global war with shifting causes and camps, heading straight for Armageddon. Dubrowski, a Russian agent embedded in London in the guise of a Polish antique dealer, narrates this descent into hell. Cynical, lucid, lyrical, often disillusioned, he keeps a diary of his adventures and incursions into friendly or hostile zones, ravaged by fear, betrayal, and death. He is a disenchanted Odysseus, changing over the episodes from the role of socialite spy to that of a scarred veteran riding with the Cossack cavalry.

Since his debut with the French comics publisher Futuropolis in 1987, Hyman has enjoyed international recognition for his work as the author and illustrator of powerful and carefully crafted graphic novels, including his adaptation of his grandmother Shirley Jackson’s renowned short story “The Lottery” (Hill & Wang/Casterman, 2016) and The Prague Coup (with writer Jean-Luc Fromental, Dupuis, 2017), a graphic novel retracing Graham Greene’s voyage to Vienna in 1948 to write The Third Man. The monograph Miles Hyman/Drawings, featuring a selection of more than 200 of his finest works to date, was published by French publisher Glénat in 2015. His award-winning drawings and paintings appear in books, magazines, and galleries in the United States and Europe. Museums throughout Europe have exhibited Hyman’s work, including the Palais de Tokyo, The Glénat Foundation, and the Musée de l’Illustration in Moulins.
