Saved by the Morph
Saved by the Morph is meant to be both a fun bit of media critique washed in nostalgia as well as a system-agnostic TTRPG sourcebook. Since my chosen outlet for exploring the link between two classic early '90s shows was a roleplaying game, this book is written with that in mind. But also, you don't have to play RPGs to enjoy the fun connections and rad monster profiles here.
Saved by the Morph contains the following segments:
- an introduction celebrating the link between two icons of 1990s teen television
- observations on the heart of adaptation - what aspects of a teen sitcom plot make it ripe for morphing into compelling Sentai?
- information on suggested mechanics and a setting (Angel Bay, California) to make your Sentai sitcom sing
- a guide taking you through a 13-episode season of Saved by the Morph, with each entry offering a quick synopsis, a breakdown of key episode conflicts, notes on fun TTRPG opportunities, and of course the MONSTER SPOTLIGHT, including fantastic original Tokusatsu creature art by Brandon Kirkman plus lots of puns
(for folks unfamiliar with the word, "Sentai" is the Japanese catch-all term for live-action superhero shows that feature color-coded heroes combining their powers to save the day. It's a subgenre of Tokusatsu, live-action adventure shows using practical effects - roughly live-action anime.)
