The HESH round worked by creating a shockwave on detonation that causes the targets armor to spall and send fragments flying around the interior of the tank, unlike traditional kinetic energy rounds, HESH rounds don't lose their effectiveness at longer ranges.
The size of the shells and the separate propellant cases made loading the 183mm gun difficult under even optimal circumstances and required two loaders to maintain a rate of fire of one round per 25-30 seconds.
